ORINTHAL, CHARLIE I, OLIVER & CHARLIE II

Orinthal J Simpson (of football, not cartoon fame) was sentenced today to (only) 7 years in jail... finally! He claimed, in his statement to the court, that he was "arrogant and ignorant..." I'll concede the first to the college-educated, fooball-"great"-turned-movie-star bastard that got away with murder mainly due to the color of his skin.

I'll never forget the glove incident in court for the murder of his wife and her friend. Why the prosecutor never demonstrated how much kidskin leather shrinks when wet with blood then dries is beyond me! Anyone that works with leather knows this fact. O.J. is still guilty of that murder in my eyes. Now he gets to pay a little and will be close to age 69 when he's finally released from jail. He should have received a much greater sentence.

Why was he "trying to recover those items" from the memorabilia dealer? He gave those to the guy for "safekeeping" so that his ex-wife's family couldn't get them to sell and raise his kids when they won their civil suit against him. So he tried cheating his kids for selfish reasons and the guys he worked with cheated him. The difference is that his ex-wife's family and the Goldman's didn't break into his house and threaten him at gunpoint for their money. This guy is a liar, a cheat, a conniver and has no morals. he deserves all the jail time he gets and more.

TODAY in refdesk (www.refdesk.com) the random Article of the Day discussed the "English Civil War." You can read about it here and I've included two tunes I like that are linked to these events: "Oliver's Army" by Elvis Costello and "The Secret Portrait/What'll Be King But Cherlie?" by Silly Wizard.

If I have it in a nutshell, Charles 1 (Charles IV of Scotland, son of James I of the King James Version of the Bible) married a Bourbon (and Catholic) princess from France. Fearful that future monarchs (and head of the Anglican Church) might end up being "papists", the Parliament began to fight for a little more power.

Being a King that fully believed he ruled "by Divine Right", he dissolved the Parliament (as was his right at the time) but needed them to fund his ventures in the Hundred Years War. When he couldn't do so, he began to impose taxes going directly to the Royal coffers that the Paliamentarian members resented and they began to protest. This caused some strife in both Ireland and Scotland.

Eventually, Charles I was charged with "Treason against the people of England", was tried and beheaded. His son went into exile for a number of years until the various organs of the headless chicken England was at the time began to squabble.

Charles II returned to the Isle via Scotland and began an uprising. Oliver Cromwell was a brilliant Military tactician (and is considered the "inventor" of the modern British Army), and pretty much sent Charlie 2 packing, then taking over as Military Dictator. When he died, England became a headless chicken again, so Charlie was asked to come home and all would be forgiven, as long as he gave in to some concessions. He did and so the "Restoration" began.

I know that my tongue-in-cheek view of this bit of English History and their "Civil War" might upset a few, but I'm always amazed at how "peace loving Christians" will turn on each other over trifles (well, if you consider wealth and power a trifle...) but will condemn any other religion that does so... but I'm off my point.

That was your little bit of history today.
