John Kinney is from here. He's totally North Carolinian and "old south." He was telling me about the research triangle here and how it's a model for other states, state universities and private business to put together research facilities, but that they are 30 years ahead of all the other states... the research triangle here was the FIRST place in the world to ever use fiber optics for communications. It was only between the research buildings, but it worked. This research park cropped up back in the late '60's/early 70's when the textile mill industry was dying around here. John tells me that, when that happened, a lot of "northerners" moved down here to participate. They settled in two places; one place called "North Hill" where all the corporate presidents and wealthy folks live. The other engineers and such settled in an area that became known as the "Cary" section of Raleigh. It's John's opinion that they named it "Cary" because it's an acronym that stands for "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees."
