pyroguysr's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D-Day 60th Anniversary And today is D-Day. 60 years ago, tens of thousands of American fathers, brothers and sons invaded Europe to wrest it from Hitler and the Nazi's. My dad's war. Back before war was a dirty word to the left. And, of all things, on PBS, for their fundraiser, they are showing a retrospective of the entertainers that went over to entertain the troops. People like Bob Hope (God bless him! He continued doing this for 40 years!!), Bing Crosby, Lena Horn, Dinah Shore and Mel Blanc (the voice of virtually all the Warner Brothers cartoon characters). You can see in their eyes the painful joy of entertaining these guys that would sit out in the rain or in the blazing sun for just a glimpse of their idols. Those same fathers, brothers and sons "enlisted for the duration" because it was the right thing to do. Fathers, brothers and sons that, in many cases didn't see their families for FOUR years, spent most of it in dirt, mud, sleet and snow... outdoors for a good portion of that time, often without a tent. I know. I had two uncles that did it. One even went to Korea and said it was worse. And our soldiers bitch about a one year duty station in Iraq.
