WHR

Just finished "Witch Hunter Robin" on Monday night. Yes, I finally ploughed through all 26 episodes (and found out that the "Extras" interview wasn't captioned in English) and I have to say I really enjoyed it for all it's moodiness and its almost overbearing goth tendencies - though in this case, all the goth characters (except 15 yr old Robin) drive very expensive looking and fast sports cars. I'd never viewed the first 10 and the final four episodes and found the conclusion, along with its vaguely Jesuit-bent teachings / religiousness to be surprising. It's a study of ones moral character, which always makes for a good story IMHO. The whole series revolves around Robin's growing "craft" powers and how she deals with it. When everyone finds that it doesn't change her, they rally around her. OK, I just gave away a major cookie there. They all, of course, rally together to defeat the bigoted (religious?) fanatic that wants to wipe "witches" off the face of the earth.

Even though it's never really delved into in any of the chapters with any sort of depth, the opening credit "footage" on each episode show her desperately watching a video of the person she adores (Amon, the "best" witch hunter in her office) and is almost erotic in its portrayal. Very well done, though none of it has anything to do with the episodes.

The ending credit footage, as well, is religious in it's portrayal of a heart enclosed in a locket (which Robin wears around her neck) that spins ever so hypnotically until it becomes "the flaming heart of Christ" and an amulet that depicts Robin's "power" in the "craft."

Like I said, interesting juxtaposition (mixing?) of the goth / wicca culture with that of Catholicism. OrsimBlossim, you may find it an interesting DVD to pick up.

If anyone has copies of, or knows where to get BANA's "Shell" or "Half-Pain" (opening and closing songs for Witch Hunter Robin), I'd like to know about it. I mean, you hear it 26 or so times and read the words to it in Japanese - and English - in the subtitles and they grow on you. Not to mention that the band's lead guitarist knows how to smoke some riffs!
