Dish Washing

My second entry for today...

This is a minor rant after helping out my neighbor by cleaning her place a little while she's gone to a wedding. Meredith is a sweetie who is overworked and underpaid in her job. She insists on paying us to walk her dog and feed her cat each time she has to go out of town for a weekend - or a week... which we would do for free because we're those kind of friends! Nellie, the cat, is no trouble at all and the only drawback to her black spaniel, Starsky, is that he slobbers all over the ball when playing his incessant game of "fetch." When over there, we do get to watch her cable TV, doggone it!

So, I figured I'd do "a little more" than toss a ball and get exercise for the money I'm getting. I cleaned her kitchen. She made spaghetti the night before when her sister was here (they had a family wedding this weekend) and... oh, never mind. She needed the place cleaned a bit (because I don't want roaches if I can help it).

When cleaning, I wondered where some of the dishes and flatware went... I looked around. Then I looked in the big white spot in the counterspace... the dishwasher.

There should be a law outlawing the installation of dishwashers in a one-bedroom apartment. There is NO WAY that one or two people can generate enough dirty dishes in one or two days to justify the expense and time it takes for a dishwasher to wash them. And, as for those of you that put two or three days worth of dishes in the dishwasher, letting all that crud harden onto them, there is NO WAY for that dishwasher to get that gunk off.

"Rinse the dishes before you put them in?" Did I just hear you say that? Tell me you didn't say that! Because if you're going to RINSE the dishes before putting them in a dishwasher, you may as well put a little soap on that sponge and just wash them by hand. Doesn't take much longer than rinsing them! My ex used to do that... rinse off the dishes and then put them in the dishwasher. The only time I ever saw reason to use the thing was to wash dishes after a holiday dinner... and again, I could only fit 1/3rd of the dishes in the damned machine. I washed the other 2/3rds in half the time it took the machine to clean the first third!

When eating, it takes us about 15 to 20 minutes to do the dishes - including the pots and pans (mainly because I use mostly cast iron, which requires only a rinse). It takes an electric dishwasher over an hour to do the same dishes! And I get them cleaner by hand washing!

No, if they want to install something, install a slide-out butchers block island so that I have more food-handling space!

*deep, cleansing breaths* *repeat*

End of rant. You can go on with your normal reading habits now.

In other news, "Buster", "Mouse", "That Damned Kitten (that's what Winston and Apollo call him), "Mauser", "Squeak", "Mister Peavey (for "piss and vinegar) or whatever we will eventually name him - keeps getting into trouble/remains as adorable as ever. He's aggravating the older cats (and we're letting them know it's OK to thwap the little bugger upside the head), getting into things he shouldn't, doing funny things (like batting at the cursor now as I type or sleeping on the mouse/keyboard). He's got this bad habit of laying on/knocking down the keyboard and laying on it, hitting the "connect to the internet" button. We have limited dialup, so now we have to put the keyboard where he can't get to it. I think he's looking at "Kitty Porn".
